Using AI and SEO to Streamline Product Descriptions: A Case for eCommerce Efficiency

Many eCommerce companies face the challenge of managing vast product catalogs with limited resources. Creating unique, SEO-optimized product descriptions for thousands of items manually is not only time-consuming but also costly. As a result, many companies are turning to AI-powered tools to speed up content creation. However, while AI can accelerate this process, many businesses overlook the critical need for SEO optimization—leading to descriptions that fail to perform effectively in search results.

In this article, we’ll explore how one eCommerce company optimized its product description process using AI automation and SEO best practices, increasing both efficiency and content quality.

The Problem: Manual Processes and Missed SEO Opportunities

For many eCommerce businesses, the sheer volume of products they offer means that creating product descriptions manually is a resource-heavy task. With limited staff, the process becomes slow and inconsistent, resulting in descriptions that often miss out on SEO opportunities, such as the integration of relevant keywords or addressing user intent.

To speed up content production, many businesses adopt AI tools. While these tools excel at generating descriptions quickly, the output is often generic or poorly optimized for search. This can lead to product pages that don’t rank well in search engine results pages (SERPs), costing companies valuable traffic and visibility.

The Solution: Optimizing AI for SEO and Automating the Workflow

For a client of ours, an eCommerce company with an extensive product catalog, we implemented a solution that not only used AI to accelerate the creation of product descriptions but also ensured that the output was optimized for SEO. Here’s how we did it:

  1. Integrating Product Data: We connected the client’s Product Information Management (PIM) system and Master Data Management (MDM) system with the AI tool, allowing for seamless integration of product data into the content generation process. This provided the AI with accurate and structured product information as the foundation for generating descriptions.
  2. Optimizing the AI Prompt for SEO: A key part of our approach was optimizing the AI’s prompt to ensure that the descriptions it produced were SEO-friendly. We applied SEO best practices, ensuring that the content was aligned with search engine algorithms.
  3. Optimizing the AI Prompt for tone-of-voice: A big issue with using AI for content creation is the lack of unique content. AI is a pro at rehashing and rewriting content, but in order to create distinctive content you need to add a distinctive voice to your AI prompt. For this reason we added the tone of voice to the AI prompt and refined this in testing until the output we got from the prompt sounded like the brand they had been building for years.
  4. Using the MoSCoW Method for Prioritization: To create high-quality product descriptions, we utilized the MoSCoW method, prioritizing elements of the product detail page. This allowed us to focus on essential aspects such as product features, first sentence…

The Results: Increased Efficiency and Quality

The result was a significant increase in efficiency. By pulling data directly from the PIM/MDM systems, the time spent gathering product details manually was drastically reduced. In addition, the quality of the content improved. Copywriters reported that the AI-generated descriptions required fewer adjustments, leading to faster approval times and less time spent on rewrites.

In the next phase, we plan to further automate the process. Once products meet certain input standards within the MDM/PIM systems, the AI will generate descriptions fully automated, without the need for human quality control.

Why Quality Still Matters in an AI-Driven World

And because it still needs to be said: invest in quality! Yes, use AI, absolutely. Use it for research, content creation, and automation, but ensure the work it delivers is of high quality.

AI is a powerful tool, but it isn’t magic. Don’t just scrape the web for information and expect the AI to produce unique, distinctive content. Might that work in the short term? Sure, but how will you stand out when your competitors are doing the same?

Feed the AI the right information—accurate, well-organized product data—and it will help you deliver quality results. This frees you up to focus on the strategic aspects of your job that AI will never replace, such as creative marketing strategies or building relationships with customers.

Conclusion: Elevating Your eCommerce Strategy with AI and SEO Automation

By integrating AI with product data and optimizing for SEO, companies can save time and resources while producing product descriptions that rank well and engage customers. But remember, quality is key. As AI continues to evolve, those who learn to combine automation with SEO best practices will be the ones who stand out in an increasingly crowded market.
